PostHeaderIcon My Daughter Is Going Into Kindergarten And I Want To Teach Her How To Read?

Everyone knows Dr. Seuss can kick start any kindergartner into reading and feeling good about doing so independently.
But it is the time cuddled in your arms, the time you and she are spending together as your daughter “reads” that will inspire her most to learn to read.

PostHeaderIcon Kindergarten Prescreening And Grade Advancement?

Hi,
My son is 5 and will go to Kindergarten in August.
We were in India previously and he had been going to school for almost 2.5 years there.
He already knows whatever the kindergarten studies include.. reading wirting capital and small alphabets, reads beginner level books, does simple arithmatic for numbers uotp 20, can read write numbers upto 200, perfectly sorts numbers, arranges in order, grouping sorting etc etc..
I’m worried that he will be bored in kindergarten and the same things will be repeated.
Has anyone got their kids tested at the schools? and sent one grade higher? how do the schools react? Do they allow it? whats the effect on the kids?
REsponses from parent who have already experienced are most welcome :) ]
Thanks!

PostHeaderIcon My Daughter’s Teacher Wants To Put Her Into A Special Reading Class, But I Don’t Think She Needs It.?

My daughter is 7years old. She has been slowly learning to read since kindergarten. She is now in the first grade. When she is home, she will read to me, and then I read to her. Several of her books are at 3rd grade levels, and she can read them with minimum help. The books her teacher sends home for her to read, she whips right through them with no problems. Today I get a letter from her teacher asking me to sign a piece of paper to have my daughter put into a “special” class for slow learners. This teacher is trying to say that my daughter is way behind her classmates in reading and spelling, even though she brings home her spelling tests and each time they’re 100%, I have them all hanging on my fridge. I’m not sure what this teacher’s problem is. All I know is that when my daughter was in kindergarten, her teacher would rave about her progress in school, and now this teacher has done nothing but complain. I’ve tried talking to the principal, but he seems very disinterested in the entire situation.
I have a son who has a LD and is ADHD. So I know what to look for. I don’t see any of these problems in my daughter. She is a very hard worker, and when she comes home after school, she does her homework first, without me even having to tell her. She has no problems reading for either me or her dad, the problem seems to happen once she walks through those doors to school. I’ve tried getting her to open up about it, but she just clams up and refuses to talk. Will I have to put her into this class or do I have options? How do I get to the root of the problem?
My daughter is looking forward to next year when she transfers out of the district she’s in and gets to attend the same school as her brother. I just need to help her hold on for another two months. Any advice? Thank you in advance : )

PostHeaderIcon Teaching Reading To A 3rd Grader?

I tutor a third-grade boy in reading once a week. I have no idea how to even really help him, since he gets frustrated within 30 seconds, and can’t read sentences like “The mouse ran into the barn.” It seemed like he just started making up sentences he thought should come next after the ones I helped him with. I kept trying to help him figure out how to phonetically sound out words, but he wouldn’t even try or pay attention. Basically, he can barely read (or can’t at all sometimes) what I read in kindergarten.
Does anyone have any ideas that would help him learn how to sound out words, recognize some words (such as “like”, “and”), or anything like a little game that would help him and keep him interested?
Thanks!

PostHeaderIcon Will My Son Be Bored In Kindergarten?

My son will be 5 in March and he has been reading and spelling for over a year. He loves math too- adding and subtracting even into negative numbers. I have to ask him to put down his math book and go outside and play! He spells backwards outloud (on his own) and works on 1st grade books without any pressure from us. He is constantly asking us questions about spelling and rhyming etc and is an amazing artist too. I am just worried that he will be bored in school. Anyone have a similar situation and how did you deal with it and the teacher?

PostHeaderIcon Preschooler Preping For Kindergarten.?

What number should a preschooler be able to count till before kindergarten to not fall behind? What about being able to write alphabets, or simple Math? Should they be able to add and subtract before kindergarten? Spelling and reading? Colors and shapes?

PostHeaderIcon Should My Child Be Expected To Read By The End Of Kindergarten?

Mine just turned 4 and he is reading a little. I bought him a Leapster L-Max for Christmas and it’s really good and he reads because he wants to know what to do next. However, it may be a bad idea for me to let him get too far ahead and then go to a public school where he’ll be bored going through the basic steps and probably start causing trouble.
Kindergarten is where they begin to learn the basics of reading and have enough knowledge to form words. So No.
