Why Do Children In 3rd Grade Get So Much Homework?
My daughter just started 3rd grade. Ever since she was in Kindergarten, always in the Public School System, she was subjected to these “Reading Writing Workshops”! I don’t mind they have some homework, but she also likes to play and there is so little as no time for it!! Do you agree?? She is stressed out!!
How Old Were Your Children When They Learned To Read/write?
And how did they learn (ie you, kindergarten, tutor, etc.) ?
Is This A Good Reason To Try Homeschooling?
My 9 year old hates school. He was fine in kindergarten and 1st grade. He always says he hates school. He goes to Jefferson Elementary in south Natomas. I see a bad trend starting here and don’t want him ruined by the public school system with their rules, regulations, comforming ways, inflexibility, and wanting children to sit there all day and not get fidgity, all closed up in a hot room all day long. His teacher tells me every time he “does not do his work in class”, among other things. I am seriously considering homeschooling him hoping this will give him more choices to learn what he wants to learn at his own pace. I think I can do it since I work part time. Are my reasons valid? He is great in math and reads well, he is good on the computers too and I thought online learning might be good for him. Please only serious replies respond. Thank you.

Does Anyone Have A Super Intelligent Child Who Is Having Problems In School?
My 6yr. old son has ADHD,OCD and aggression problems. He is taking medicine to help with these but he has been suspended from kindergarten numerous times. He refuses to do his work in class or his teacher must really try hard to get him to do it. As an alternative to suspending him this week, they put him in a 3rd grade class with a male teacher that is really good with the kids. My son spent all week doing 3rd grade work. He read on a 3rd grade level and answered questions correctly. Also did math games on the computer at a 3rd grade level. Has anyone else had a similar experience and how do you handle something like this? We have worked very closely with the school teacher, counselor and assistant principal on this matter. We also have him in private therapy. After this week, everyone involved in this is amazed by what he has done. Monday he has to go back to kindergarten and I dread it because I know the problems will begin again.
My Daughter Will Be Starting Kindergarten Next Year, …?
she will be the youngest in her class.
how can I prepare her for kindergarten.
We have a whole year.
She dose associate with other children her age.

She knows basics like the alphabet, counting as far as 14, all her colors and shapes, her address, telphone number etc…

Ideas For Grade Level Skill Maintenance Over The Summer Break?
I teach Kindergarten, first- and second-graders and I’ve had several parents ask what they should work on with their children over the summer to ensure that they do not “lose” the skills they have attained during the school year. I’ve already suggested that they read every day, but I’m wondering if there are good workbooks or websites that would help my students maintain (or even progress) over the summer instead of losing ground. Thanks!
“all I Ever Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten”?
If you’ve read the book by Robert Fulghum, I have a question.
What do you think is the most important lesson the author learnt? Why?
Here is the poem if you would like to re-read:
All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten.
ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW about how to live and what to do
and how to be I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not
at the top of the graduate-school mountain, but there in the
sandpile at Sunday School. These are the things I learned:
Share everything.
Play fair.
Don’t hit people.
Put things back where you found them.
Clean up your own mess.
Don’t take things that aren’t yours.
Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody.
Wash your hands before you eat.
Flush.
Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
Live a balanced life – learn some and think some
and draw and paint and sing and dance and play
and work every day some.
Take a nap every afternoon.
When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic,
hold hands, and stick together.
Be aware of wonder.
Remember the little seed in the styrofoam cup:
The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody
really knows how or why, but we are all like that.
Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even
the little seed in the Styrofoam cup – they all die.
So do we.
And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books
and the first word you learned – the biggest
word of all – LOOK.
Everything you need to know is in there somewhere.
The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation.
Ecology and politics and equality and sane living.
Take any of those items and extrapolate it into
sophisticated adult terms and apply it to your
family life or your work or your government or
your world and it holds true and clear and firm.
Think what a better world it would be if
all – the whole world – had cookies and milk about
three o’clock every afternoon and then lay down with
our blankies for a nap. Or if all governments
had a basic policy to always put thing back where
they found them and to clean up their own mess.
And it is still true, no matter how old you
are – when you go out into the world, it is best
to hold hands and stick together.
