Is My Five Year Old Behind In School?
My daughter’s school hired a new teacher for her kindergarten class just after Christmas break. Before then she was bringing home reading books to read at home, working on sight words, and seemed to be doing classwork that was at her grade level. However, since the new teacher her papers that she is bringing home seem to be more like busy work or things that she did last year in Pre-K. She knows all of her letter sounds, and has minimal problems sounding out words. She can count fluently to 60, writes her own name, can read and write numbers, and has no problem recognizing the names of the letters and writing them. I have heard many people say that by this time in kindergarten they should be reading out of a level two book. I work with her as much as possible at home, but like any child she responds better to someone that is not her parent. She has tested gifted, when she was tested at school about a month ago. She seems to be ahead of the other kids in her class, but I still don’t feel she is getting the full learning opportunities. Is she behind? ahead? or where she needs to be? How should I go about expressing my concerns about feeling the teacher is not teaching? Any help/answers or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Is The Younger One The Brighter One? Help!?
I am homeschooling our four year old daughter (kindergarten) and six year old son (first grade). They are only 19 months apart in age. Last year, my son was in kindergarten and my daughter in a 3-year-old program at a Christian school. My son did wonderfully! He works kind of slow (methodical and deliberate), but is advanced in his abilities. My daughter also is advanced, and actually started reading last year.
This year, we decided to home school because of location (we are out in the country and it takes 1 1/2 hours to drive them to school and get back home). Also, the school did not want to place our daughter in kindergarten, even though she was already accomplishing kindergarten tasks (such as reading and simple addition) and would be four-and-a-half at the beginning of the school year.
Although I know my son is advanced for his age when compared with his peers, now that we are homeschooling, he is observing that my daughter is picking things up (especially memorization) more quickly than he is. He is starting to ask questions about whether or not she is doing this or that “better” than he is. If he were with his peers, I think he would realize that he is doing great. But little sister is quickly catching up to him in academic abilities, and he is noticing.
HELP! How do I keep my son encouraged that he is doing well when his younger sister is catching up?
Does Anyone Have An Idea For A (military Style) Cadence That I Could Sing With My First Graders?
It sounds a little “Kindergarten Cop” but they have lots of fun with it… This is my only good example:
(teacher) We know first grade is the best
(echo) We know first grade is the best
(teacher) Better – Better than the rest
(echo) Better – Better than the rest
(teacher) We can read and we can write!
(echo) We can read and we can write!
(teacher)Our math is out of sight!
(echo) Our math is out of sight!
(teacher)Sound off
1,2
(teacher)Sound off
3,4
etc. etc….
Please – no comments on the military – this is supposed to be fun!
Adhd Treatment? Does Anyone Have Any Feedback On Adhd Treatment? Medication Vs. Behavior Modification?
We had my son (6 yrs) evaluated by his doctor as well as a specialist after we became concerned about his performance in school. It seemed no matter what we tried, we just couldn’t get him to settle down long enough to learn. Much to our dismay, he was indeed diagnosed with ADHD. My husband I felt felt strongly that we should attempt behavior modification methods to control his condition in lew of medication. However, it has been more than a year now to no avail. He is still unable to sit still, concentrate, behave approriately, handle normal upsetting situations, etc. His physician isn’t much help, believing that the decision of my son’s treatment is up to us as his parents and he will proceed with either course of action. The specialist is of equal little help. At this point my son is in danger of failing kindergarten! I have read up on ADHD meds until I can’t see straight, but I would like to get some feedback from others parents in this situation.

Are Kids Learning To Read Younger And Younger These Days? Please Read First – Kinda Long?
Let me set this straight: I did not go to preschool and kindergarten with a bunch of mouthbreathing little idiots. I know many of my old classmates still, and the vast majority of them grew up to be very bright. My twin and I learned the ABCs at about 2, and started learning how to read shortly thereafter. We were a little more advanced than most of the others, but by the time we left kindergarten, a good 95% could read well and independently. Now, I know several little kids from both my hometown (I went to a Montessori for preschool and kindergarten) and New Orleans, where I worked in the schools, and most kids still aren’t great readers until they’re 7 or so. I also know a very educated, involved family with 3 very smart young boys who didn’t really know how to read until they were 5.
However, many people on here have talked about their child singing the ABC’s by 1, knowing their letters by two, writing their name by 2 1/2, reading Crime and Punishment at 3…it all seems unusually advanced – some kids I know could do this, but they were the valedictorians of their classes. So these are the options I see:
A) Yahoo answers parenting is actually a front for Mensa Babies
B) At least 75% of these people are lying or exagerrating
C) The schools in my hometown and New Orleans are just bad (which is true), and this is actually pretty common now
D) Yahoo answers parenting attracts a large number of involved, education-oriented parents
E) Something else
What do you think? I am curious about this. And no offense to any NOLA public school teachers out there. Thanks!
I Need To Find Out The Name Of An Old Childrens Book…?
There was this book my kindergarten teacher used to read me so i gets its an older one (though im only 21 years old now). its about an old man who lived in the woods i think. he spun a glowing string or collected a string, and rolled it up until at the end of the book, the glowing string became the moon in the sky.
Children Activities Can Anyone Help Me On The Question?
Two important activities will help to form your child care program design. One of the activities are studying your program materials what is the other?
1. babysitting friends’ or relatives’ children.
2. observing child care facilities.
3. reading additional books on child care.
4. volunteering to help with kindergarten classes.
I think its number 2 or 3 but, i would like another persons opinion.
Thanks!

Once upon a time, there was a prince named Sean and a princess named Maria who both lived in two different worlds.
The prince’s world was filled with monsters and dragons.
The princess lived in a world where it was full of nature.
They both had one thing in common, they loved to write stories.
One day, Princess Maria was sitting on her porch thinking of an idea for her new story.
Suddenly, Maria fell into a deep sleep. She dreams that she woke up in a Magical Forest and she was wandering around when she bumped into a very handsome prince named Sean, she falls in love with him.
Maria thought she was still dreaming, until the prince told her that it wasn’t a dream, and it was in fact, real.
Prince Sean and Princess Maria did not know their way out of their incomplete story. They decided to ask a character in the book for help, but which one they wondered. “ THE FRIENDLY GIANT!” they both yelled at once. “ hey, how do you know my story?”, questioned Maria. “ Your story?!?, I wrote this!”, said Sean.
They finally realized that they both wrote the same story and that’s why they were sucked in to this book.
They kept on walking until they met the Friendly Giant who said “ The only way out is if you complete this story together, before sunset”.
Maria and Sean flipped and flipped pages until it was the last page. They both thought and thought and worked together. Finally, they got it done.
They ending was” Prince Sean and Princess Maria lived happily ever after”. THE END !
What Can I Do About My Son’s Behavior At School? (long Q, Advice Needed!!)?
My son started kindergarten a month ago, he went to preschool (public) before also. I never got compliants about his behavior from his pre-k teachers. They tested both of my sons for Austism because of the problem his brother has, but this son came up negative for anything on the spectrum. Now in kindergarten his teacher is telling me he talks out of turn a lot, gets out of his seat a lot, and needs directions repeated more than usual. At home we go over the ‘school rules’ every night, and he knows them by memory. Today I got another phone call saying “Your son is the highest level reader in our class, and we are taking children from the kindergartens that can read already, and having them leave the classroom as an advanced group” So I thought finally good news. WRONG! “I think your son’s behavior might disrupt the group though, and it’d be better if he stayed in my classroom, BUT my highest level in the classroom is 60 lessons behind the advanced group he may get bored, but I think its in his best interest to learn the rules with me here” So I just said Okay, I will work on the rules with him. I really don’t know why he is behaving like this – I think he might be ADHD, and I don’t want to ‘over-diagnos’, but the teacher isn’t aloud to tell me if she think he has it. Who can I ask? I am really getting upset, and thinking I am just a bad mom now. My husband is gonna request a meeting with her next week. Who can I ask thats allowed to test my son? What can I do to improve this?
