PostHeaderIcon Does My Daughter Have Dyslexia?

my daughter has skipped kindergarten because she could read really early on. She was one of the best spellers in the fourth grade. Now in 7th grade going on to 8th she can barely read and she can barely spell. Dos dyslexia develop or what? I’m confused she gets made fun of by friends saying she is stupid. she gives up at school because she gets D’s. It takes her over one hour to read a chapter in a regualr little reading book. Even one of her teachers said she was a waste of time to teach because she never caught on with her reading. My daughter just plays it off like its an act in front of the teachers and friends, but i know she i struggling. I thought it was the right thing to move her up but now i dont know. Does she have dyslexia

i think you should get her tested for dyslexia or other mental difficulties, im going into 9th grade and i have an I.E.P=individul education plan, basically if something is harder for me than others in my class they tweak it so it is easier for me to work with! my brother (16y/o) is autistic(sp?) and we didnt know untill he was 14, so i think you should have her evaluated!
    hope i helped

First, take her to an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) and have her vision checked to make sure that she can see the words and it isn’t something simple like she needs glasses to see the words. Then, find someone who tests for FUNCTIONAL VISION. It is how your eyes and brain work together as a team and often presents as dyslexia because she might be reversing her letters when she writes and lines of text might be wavy. She might be seeing double and not trust the message her eyes send to her brain, so she has given up reading. It is possible she needs glasses and vision therapy.

its a born learining disability but it can sometime present at a later age. Have her tested. Its not cheap but it will be worth it. Plus there are many learning disabilities out there other then dyslexia. See what it may be and how to go about helping her learn a different way.

if she had dyslexia she would have had problems reading when she was younger (unless she was reciting already memorized books). My husband had it and his mom thought he could read at a young age until he read the book upside down one day! He had memorized the words to all his books.
Ask for testing from the school for IEP

I don’t think your daughter has dyslexia. If she did, she would have had great difficulty learning to read. There is some other issue somewhere else. It might just be a lack of motivation, but it needs to be addressed.

DYSLEXIA COULD BE A POSSIBILITY. I WOULD TAKE HER TO THE DOCTOR AND GET HER CHECKED B/C ONE OF THE SIGNS OF DYSLEXIA IS SEEING THE LETTERS BACKWARDS. AS FOR THAT TEACHER I WOULD REPORT HER OR BETTER YET WHIP HER ***

It may be that she wasn’t reading early on, that she was smart enough to memorize what the book said and recite it back to you and pretend she was reading.
It’s sad about her teacher: that person is a loser.
She may have dyslexia, or it may be another learning disability. She should be tested. The school district should offer testing: you may have to push them for it. If the principal won’t help, go to the school board. You should also report that teacher. I would suggest you go to the school and observe her classroom.
Also, try Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic. If she can get audio versions of her textbooks, read by volunteers, she can keep up in school and learn through listening. http://www.rfbd.org. They may also be able to tell you how to get her tested, based on where you live.
    Good luck.

I have dyslexia and I am 29 school was very very hard for me. It took me for ever to read chapter books and get my homework done. My parents noticed my problems in I think fourth grade. You can go thru your daughters school to have her tested but I will for warn you that the school system will make her and you think that she needs to be put in a SPECIAL class NO thats not true. I graduated with my class and never went into any special classes. But I did learn how to read and spell in my own special way. I saw letters backwards like p,for q bs fors ds and Ms for Ns. But go slow at this you dont want her to think she is dumb. And maybe there is no reading problems at all maybe there is something else going on with her… Hope this helps alittle best of luck

OMG I can not believe her teacher said she was a waste of time. That is a warning sign right there. It may not be your child with the problem. Her teacher has given up on her, you need a different teacher. If not that enroll her into an after school Sylvia learning center she just may need to catch up on her reading because she skipped grades, the other kids had longer to learn these things, she had to speed through it. Look into something, dont let your child who is obviously very smart suffer when it could be avoided.
Oh by the way if she had dyslexia she would have had problems before now, like when she was learning to read.
    good luck
