PostHeaderIcon Help! How To Teach A 5 Year Old To Read !?

Hi. How can I teach a 5 year old boy to read? He’s in Sr. Kindergarten (in Canada we have a Jr. and Sr. kindergarten). He can count to 100, knows his colours, alphabets and their sounds. Im trying to teach him how to read. He knows the letter sounds but I dont know what to do from there. This is what I do.
eg. A – N – T
aaahhh nnnnnnn tuhhh
spells ant
B – A – G
bbbbuuh aaaahhh guuhhh
spells bag
I give him words like Bus, off, tom, hey, add, ant etc.
He doesn’t under stand how to read them!
How can I teach him how to read?
He knows his sounds, but the problem is, a single letter. eg. A, can have multiple sounds. AHHH, UHH, or AIH
And even if he does make the right sounds, eg. C AT , cuuhh aahhh ttt,
the sounds are right but he doesnt know how to connect them! He’ll keep repeating the sound but wont know what the word is? How can I teach him how to connect the sounds to make one word.
Please help!
Note: I don’t want any answers saying: He’s 5, let him play etc.
Because most of his classmates can already read and in gr 1, reading is required.
Thanks

Reading is a developmental process that begins long before Phonics and decoding, which is what you’re describing. Keep in mind that not all children are ready to read at the same age, nor do they progress along the path at the same rate. (In fact I had a principal once tell me that lots of children, boys especially, weren’t ready to read until they started losing teeth!) Obviously he is not ready for Phonics if he’s not making the connections, so take a step back to what is called “Phonological Awareness”. You can research much more on your own, but I have included a link below to a list of activities designed to increase Phonological Awareness that you can do at home. Happy Reading!
