PostHeaderIcon Homework In Kindergarten Is Getting Out Of Control……………?

My son is in kindergarten, and I have never seen a kid at this level have so much homework. Tonight he has to write his first and last name 3 times, write half of the alphabet in capitol letters, write 1-50 by ones and count to 100 by 5′s and 10′s. After that he has two worksheets he has to read to me, then study three pages worth of work already done this year to prepare for his 9 weeks test on friday. He is 5 and hates school, I’m trying to encourage him to look at it in a different view but between me and you this is crazy, and I find it hard to blame him for hating school!! What would you do????

It does sound like a lot of homework! Pray, pray and pray some more. You might want to look into PUBLIC school at home; where you decide if there is any homework. Go to k12.com. Sometimes it depends on the teacher and since you already spoke to his teacher try talking to other parents, both from your son’s classroom and other classrooms and depending on your findings bring it to the principal. My son was an honor student until 5th grade when he refused to to any homework for 3 years in a row. His test scores were in the 90′s but failed the three years for lack of homework. I moved to Kingsland Georgia where he was not given any homework; soon he was back on the honor roll! Now age 18 and in 11th & 12th grade, he will be attending both high school and college; graduating with a high school diploma and two years of college! Every child is different, don’t give up. Show your son how homework time can be “mommy and son” time, just be careful not to let him become dependent on you.

When I was in school I was taught that students should have about 10 minutes of homework per year of age, topping out at 2 hours. That’s also what my principal dictates at my (middle)school. You’ve already talked to the teacher about your concerns, which was the correct first step. It is entirely possible that she really doesn’t have control over how much homework she has to assign. The next step would be to approach the principal about your concerns. Find out how much time the other students in your son’s class are spending on homework; it will help if you have other parents backing up your complaint. Good luck!

Wow, that is one heck of a lot of work for a Kindergarten student. There’s no way you’re going to be able to keep his attention focused on the work for that long.
You should talk with his teacher about your concerns, and try to get a sense of the goals of the curriculum that is used for kindergarten. Find out what the teacher expects from the kids and the parents, and see if you can agree on how much should be done outside of the classroom

this is only the beginning of the “homework issue” as your child moves up to the next grade, more homework will be sent home… many parents have complained and it is still happening…..when i was in school [40 plus years ago] one never had homework until 7th and 8th grade and of course high school. we all made it though will less money being spent. now i believe the teachers are being paid way to much, do not spend time in class to teach, but take their time making all of the homework papers,, it is crazy…….
