Have him repeat the directions (in his own words) to you — make it fun by using different voices: monster voice, whisper voice, LOUD voice, sing-song voice, etc.
To help build listening make sure to read to him or get him books on CD.
Most importantly, remember that at this age 5 problems is more than enough work and attentions spans are about 5 minutes long.

I am in the same boat as you, I got him Hooked On Phonics to get him caught up on his reading. He loves to go into his own world he is very ADHD, I find it helpfully by letting him do what he wants for 30min, if it be the DS, T.V., computer, or go play with a friend. I make clear after his 30 mins he needs to work with me on a reading lesson, I do one lesson or 15 min which ever comes first. Sometimes it goes smoothly and sometimes it dosn’t.

Play a game like red light green light so he has to listen or play a game like animal crossing. Say walk across the lawn like you are a happy gorilla. It’s fun and he will listen better.

Start off by telling him to look at you and concentrate on what you are saying. Ask him if he understands and don’t push too much!

Get a better grip on the English language and hope that he isn’t listening until then.
