How Do I Teach My Son To Read?
it’s summer time and i want my child to learn how to read. he is very intelligent and can write very well. he is just stubborn to the sound it out technique. very stubborn. when looking at a work, he’s like…”i know what it says so just tell me.” kids, they are so funny. no, there’s nothing wrong with him, just plain ole stubborness!
he’s going to be five in july and since he’s already recognizing a bunch of sight words and writing so well i would think he is ready to try. i don’t know if kindergarten will be challenging enough for him considering he has already been in prek since he was 3. so i want him to be able and ready and above and beyond what his teachers expect. i may be a crazy mom but i just want to ensure that i can teach him something this summer. i read to him, he knows what letters are and what sound they make, believe me, he’s so smart…any ideas and tips to get me started?
sight words are very good, that will help him out tremendously. Maybe you’ll want to get some fun videos/computer games that help to teach reading, he might not be so stubborn if he thinks it’s a fun game….my youngest daughter was JUST like your son, of course there wasn’t “hooked on phonics” and computer stuff back then. Best of luck, you sound like a great mom!
How odd, my boss was just talking about that last week! She said it’s called being a ‘sight learner,’ and unfortunately it’s a tough situation. She said she had a real hard time buckling down and learning to do it, but she did it. (She now owns a successful dental office, has real estate investments, and manages two farms!)
Bear in mind that all children are different, so perhaps this will not be the case for your son. I learned to read when I was four, just from Sesame Street with the ‘sound it out’ theory.
Maybe if you don’t pressure him too much, he’ll come around on his own. Maybe his “very stubborn” is his way of wanting you to back off a little bit. Your anxiety may translate to a negative feeling for him.
well its is very simple, if you are reading get him to get an idea of the sounds of the letters and when u read get him to sound them out
I am a teacher, and I had the same problem when I first introduced the concept of reading to my son. I had a lot of success using a game format. I would put all different words on flash cards (index cards) and the ones he either recognized or decoded using phonics would go into the “Yeah!!!” pile, and the ones he had trouble with or I had to model sounding out would go back in the “Try again.” pile. He liked to see if each day or time he tried if he could win a higher number of cards. After a while, he took to carrying the cards around with him. (I would keep adding to the pile, of course.)
Now that he is in Kindergarten, he reads very well, but he was not really very interested in reading books of his age level independently. If I read with him, he loves it though. Then I discovered Yu Gi Oh cards.(The collectible cards all the kids have…) Toys r us and all toys stores has them. He LOVES them, and sits there trying to sound out the names of the characters, the powers they have, how many points they are worth…These cards are GOLDEN. I taught him that he can “organize” the cards into piles by using the alphabet (ABC order). He has hundreds of cards, so once he gets the alphabet layed out, he can “organize” while he watches tv. He takes the cards everywhere, and reads them to people. Some of the words are extremely difficult, and I am shocked by how he plugs away until he can read the entire card himself. He can read most of them now, and like I said,he has hundreds. I hope this helps!!! Good luck!!!
Give him one of Dan Brown’s books to read.
