Is It Normal For Children Who Are Starting Kindergarden To Not Read??
my son just turned 5 at the end of may. He will be starting kindergarten in the fall. He can read and write his name and small words like cat, dog, mom and dad. Is this good enought for kindergarten? He knows most all of the letters and knows how to count to 15.
Sounds like he is WONDERFULLY on track, especially with reading and writing! Most kids I seem being promoted onto kindergarten usually can’t read yet, and can usually only spell their names without someone saying the exact letter to write! The counting he should be fine but I would work with him a little more on it, get him to atleast count to 25+
But sounds like you have done a GREAT job with him!
We just got a handout from our school’s kindergarten on this issue. It says that while some kids do enter kindergarten reading, there is absolutely no expectation that kids entering kindergarten can read, and that it’s also expected that not all kindergarteners will read even by the end of the kindergarten year. It’s normal to read well when entering kindergarten; equally normal to read a little bit or recognize a few words; and also normal not to read at all until first grade.
Read and talk to him a lot, since his vocabulary will end up being just as important (if not more so) than whether he can read at the start of kindergarten. You can also do a lot of playing with sounds (like making rhymes or words that start with the “s” sound. But no need to worry at all. He sounds very typical.
In my opinion, as I just finished my phonics/reading classes for my early childhood education degree, your child is right on track. He will learn more words and learn how to count further in kindergarten. Kindergarten is meant to prepare children for the learning they will be accomplishing in grade school and you need to learn the basics first. If you feel your child may be behind, you could always work with him more if it would make you feel more comfortable, but don’t make it seem like he has to know this and this before the first day of school because he knows more than what a many of the kids will when they walk into the classroom.
He should be fine. My stepdaughter is going into kindergarten this fall also, and she did go to preschool this year. She know most of her letters, and can write her name, but is not really reading yet either. I think they really work harder on reading once they actually get into kindergarten, especially as they get closer to the end of the year to help prepare them for 1st grade. He should be fine!
My daughter turned 5 in March and is going to kindergarten in the fall. What your son can do is more than they could ask for. At least where i live, anyways. When we went to the enrollment, the only thing they were really wanted to see was the kids knowing how to recognize their names (not necessarily reading their name, but able to recognize the letters that make up their name), count to 10, recognize at least 10 letters of the alphabet, and be able to recite the alphabet with little to no help. So, i think your son will do just fine. Never say “good enough” because we all know that any thing our children do is way more than good enough!!
Help him enjoy kindergarten and talk to him about his day. If you would like to help him learn more, talk to the teachers about doing some of the things at home that they are doing at school. Im sure they would be more than happy to help you to help your son!
Good luck!!
Alot of children can’t read in kindergarten. Get him simple books wal-mart use to have dick and jane you know the old time story. Also Dr. Seuss the cat in the hat. Pretend to let them read a bedtime story to you my son loved doing that I would lay down and give him a book I would pretend to go to sleep but I would peek and help on words he didn’t know he learned that way.
don;t believe these people/
my daughter was reading at 4. she can read most first grader book and she just finish kindergarten. my daughter at age 4 can count and write the number to 100 and she knew all her ABC at 2 1/2
don;t mean to sound mean, but you need to teach your kid at home. he will be kindergarten for 2 years.
Well I knew my numbers, letters and how to read and how to write my name BEFORE I entered Kindergarten. I was taught by my Grandmother. She also taught me to write cursive when I was in 1st grade. Parents need to take a large roll in their child’s learning, before and during the school years
Yes, thats perfectly fine. They will begin teaching him basic math skills and further his vocabularly a bit in kindergarten. Its actually been shown that kids should hold off on reading until 2nd grade, when their skills are best learned. For now, focus on developing his language skills, these are essential to reading.
preschool is mainly for communication and people skills, just to help the child make friends and learn.technically kids dont start learning how to read until 1st grade so he is doing good.my nephews going to kindergarden and still spells his name with a backward s..joseph…lol..and they said he was doing good
If I can remember correctly, I couldn’t read that well and I had terrible handwriting. Now I’m close to the top of the class ((8th grade)), so I’m sure he’s fine. He seems to know more than I did at that age
Excellent. Remember, kindergarten is just as much about learning routines and how to behave in a classroom setting. What your son already has accomplished is suitable for his age, and will adapt quite well. Good luck!
They teach him how to read when he in kindergarten and writing and other things. My son just graduate kindergarten and going to first grade. He came home with books to learn to read that you would have to work with him.
That is good enough for kindergarten. My boys can not do alot of the things you’ve just mentioned and they took a readiness test and it said that they were ready for kindergarten, so Im sure your son will be fine
Yes, of course. Real reading comes in Grade one, when they are six.
Your son sounds like he’s doing well! Maybe over the summer, work on the sounds of the letters with him – in a fun way!
Yes, that’s average to above average for the public school system. They need to count to 20 by the end of Kindergarten and read the standard sight word list. So he is pretty much on his way.
When I went into kindergarden, I did not know how to read but I was fermiller with some words becuase my mom and dad read to me so much before I went. I leaned to read easy because of it. I hope this helped.

the is above average in my opinion i couldn’t read going into 1st grade!!! so he’s ready and he’ll be fine!! good luck with child.
Sounds pretty normal. There will be some children who can’t do that yet, and some who can read fluently and write basic sentences. He’ll be somewhere in the middle.
It should be, school districts are different in their curriculum, but if it was a problem, I’m sure they would have told you.
My daughter did not learn to read until 1st grade, and was not expected to learn to in kindergarten.
He sounds like he’s ready to go.
that’s more than enough to know. No kids I know could read at that age. I never pushed my son either he knew to copy things and small words like your son.
That is great! Most kids can’t do that much half way through kindergarden.
Your son sounds like he is ahead of the game. Therefore, Kindergarten will be a snap for him.
thats excellent most kindergarten kids cant read at all
Yes. Reading is what is taught in kindergarten. If the kids already knew how there would be no point!
He will be fine. Relax.
Not in these times ~ most 5 year olds can read, spell, write and count since they most likely have been in daycare since they were 6 months old ~ kids learn much faster these days or I should say earlier.
He is fine. He wont’ be left behind.
