PostHeaderIcon Is My Five Year Old Behind In School?

My daughter’s school hired a new teacher for her kindergarten class just after Christmas break. Before then she was bringing home reading books to read at home, working on sight words, and seemed to be doing classwork that was at her grade level. However, since the new teacher her papers that she is bringing home seem to be more like busy work or things that she did last year in Pre-K. She knows all of her letter sounds, and has minimal problems sounding out words. She can count fluently to 60, writes her own name, can read and write numbers, and has no problem recognizing the names of the letters and writing them. I have heard many people say that by this time in kindergarten they should be reading out of a level two book. I work with her as much as possible at home, but like any child she responds better to someone that is not her parent. She has tested gifted, when she was tested at school about a month ago. She seems to be ahead of the other kids in her class, but I still don’t feel she is getting the full learning opportunities. Is she behind? ahead? or where she needs to be? How should I go about expressing my concerns about feeling the teacher is not teaching? Any help/answers or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I wouldn’t worry too much about this. If she is ahead of her grade level she should be fine… by the time she leaves Elementary school if she is still ahead of all her peers, which she probably will be considering she still is now, she should be in good shape. It sounds like she’s fine now. Keep in mind now would be a good time to get her ready for her future. If you want her to learn a foreign language that you can speak fluently or a little, you should try talking to her in that. Good luck =)
