Is There Any Way To Get My Child Into First Grade In A State Where Kindergarten Is Mandatory?
My child turned 5 just three days after the “must be five years old by ____” deadline last year. She started kindergarten last week and I am appalled by the “curriculum” . My daughter can read entire books, whereas in her class, they’re aiming for the children to be able to read 40 words by the end of the year. They’re learning shapes and the alphabet and to be able to count to ten and write their names. All things I began teaching her around the age of two. I feel that she is going to suffer academically. No, I know she is. I think the law is garbage. Does anyone know of ANY way to get around this? Thanks…
Schedule a meeting with the principle and see if you could have her skip a grade. Or perhaps enroll her in a private school that will allow her to enter first grade.
