My son is four but already reads, writes (not that well though) and works on first grade computer educational games. He can’t follow the rules of the local kindergarten class so I am thinking of homeschooling him. Some of the rules of the class are:
1. Sit at the desk for 25 minutes focusing on the task at hand
2. Be able to sit in the circle and listen to a book without interruption or distraction
3. Follow directions the first time they are given
4. Keep hands/feet to yourself
5. Do not disturb or neighbor or fellow students
I’m sorry but as an adult I have problems with some of the rules. My son only sits really still and quiet if he is watching a movie he hasn’t seen before. He loves to interact with other people and really loves to make the sound effects for stories being read. He really loves to learn and I hate to have that be ruined by not being able to follow the rules.

It’s a little too cute but this site sums up the old chestnut…
Really, rules are there for everyone to have a fair piece of the action in a school day. Homeschooling’s fine there’s plenty of great kids doing it.

Those rules are pretty important for discipline. You don’t want to have a selfish child or one who doesn’t respect others.
Maybe rule three should be a bit different – if a child is trying to learn and doesn’t understand directions, he should be encouraged to ask for help. Rule three makes it sound as though a child must be perfect all the time.

Actually scientists have shown that a kid can sit and focus the amount of minutes of their age +2. So if your son is 5 you should expect him to work focused/quietly for 7 minutes other than that the rules sound pretty good.

Well in kindergarten we could basically talk all we wanted and we learned the simple things like reading writing and the ABC’s… We never really had to follow most of the rules that you stated in your question.

Whew, listen Wordsworth if you go on rants like that then your kid is never going to be able to have you as a teacher, heck, I am a teacher and I had trouble keeping still reading this diatribe

you can home school him and when the new school year begins you can put him in a first grade class or you can just skip kidergarden and go to 1st.

you learn how to read, write your name, they teach you simple addition and subtraction problems such as 3+2 and 6-5. Well, if your planning on sending him to a catholic school, which is where i went, i remember that they teach you the main parts of what happened with Jesus without going to deep in with to much detail. They teach your son how to cooperate in school and they teach you how to be kind to your friends. I am pretty shure that that is what you need to know in kindergarden. There might be a little more they might teach him but im not sure. I am sure if you home school your son he will be fine.
